Dracula Untold inhabits a strange hybrid world: a realistic and historical time and place filled with supernatural and wondrous forces. The landscape is breathtakingly expansive. Characters range the whole spectrum from commoners to conquerors, monks to princes, soldiers to mythical figures — all who struggle for survival, dominance, power, and desire. A deep backstory looms over the film: Vlad’s formidable past and the vicious history between his people and their oppressors.
This title sequence is a tapestry of all these motifs presented in an impacting visual style. Landscapes, artifacts, relics, and icons lay the grounds of where our story takes place. A single drop of silver runs along the surface and leads us into various chapters, each vignette a thematic metaphor of Vlad’s world. Our perceptions are constantly shifting — scale, perspective, figure/ground all become subjective.
This concept explores the film's intrinsic dualities: Good and Evil. Order and Chaos. Purity and Corruption. Love, Greed, Hate, Temptation, and Submission are all prevalent themes in Untold. The ethereal visuals further embraces these dualities; lofty, elegant, and even dreamy, a deceptive veil over the true nature that lies within its subjects. And it is sensual. The imagery and tone evokes a provocative yet subtle femininity and sexuality. The vignettes are abstract — we see visual metaphors of more intangible concepts such as love, struggle, purity, and destruction. Smoke and light continually flow and wisp, occluding and revealing the elements throughout the sequence. The colors fall into an to an airy, light palette until the final chapter; the introduction of a single drop of blood breaks the spell and ushers us into the stark reality of the film.
