Main Title Concept "Allegory"
Amidst the theological, scientific, and metaphysical clamor surrounding the departure, the crux of The Leftovers is humanity forced to cope with monumental loss. Allegory explores the compelling intersection of faith, science, and humanity in an evocative and modern rendition of the elegy.
- TIME (Science). A series of vignettes depict the split second following the event. A dropped glass of wine. An empty swing. An abandoned meal. Shot in super-slow motion, a single moment in time is frozen and exploded, demanding our reverence and scrutiny.
- MEMORY (Humanity). "I can remember everything. That’s my curse... It’s the greatest curse that’s ever been inflicted on the human race: memory.” — Jedediah Leland, Citizen Kane. The dream-like aesthetic evokes the surreal images which painfully remind us of their final moments on Earth. As Leland also points out, memory works in funny ways of shaping our perspectives. The power of the departure is that it can transform the simplest object into the most haunting memory.
- THEOLOGY (Faith). The inescapable correlation to the religious prophecy is subversively threaded in the sequence. The themes of rapture and end times are strewn throughout the biblical scriptures and are the basis of the vignettes. Pentecost. Lot’s Wife. Sodom and Gomorrah.
